Born in Northern California in 1889, by age 16 was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento, CA. He joined G S Garcia in Elko, NV and is credited with the production of some of Garcia's finest work. In 1917 Gutierrez teamed up with Bill Phillips in Cheyenne, Wyoming for the short-lived but legendary partnership of Phillips & Gutierrez. Returning to Northern California in 1920, he joined Juan Estrada, and later worked from his San Francisco home at 1084 Le Conte Avenue until his death. Gutierrez made bits and spurs for Hamley, Olsen-Nolte, Fred Stern and G S Garcia in addition to his own mark.
