E. C. "Eddie" Hulbert

Eddie Hulbert
Bit/Spur Maker
1898-1960
Birthplace: Chicago, IL
Last Known Location: Wyoming/Montana

Edmund Cummings Hulbert was born to a prominent Chicago family in 1898. His mother died when he was two and his father when he was eleven necessitating his relocation to Cedarvale Dude Ranch at Hillsboro, Montana, near the Wyoming-Montana border. It was here that young Eddie got his training as a horseshoer and blacksmith. According to interviews with people who knew Eddie, it appears that he had no mentor in the making of bits and spurs but was self-taught. By the mid-1920s his talent was recognized by some of the major saddleries with Hamley, Fred Muller and Otto Ernst Catalogs advertising his bits and spurs as part of their line. Hulbert's bits and spurs are frequently marked with a stylized EH.
